Placing letterboxes

Question for you experienced boxers. Is it wise to place a box in an
area that you will not be returning to? The box then becomes an
orphan. Or do you just place it and not worry whether it will be
taken care of? Purple Iris

You are going to get differing views on this one. Some people call these
litterboxes while others think they are OK.

There are many fantastic, but relatively unknown places are exposed to people by
following letterbox clues. Some of these places may be remote in location and
the person who plants the box would love to share this with others.

I personally think that orphan boxes are OK. If you are concerned about leaving
a box stranded, you could try looking up clues for other boxes in the area and
ask the planter of those boxes if they would mind being a caretaker.

It may even be better to ask the person before leaving on the trip to plant the
boxes to aviod having them orphaned.

This is like worrying about whether it will rain on your picnic!

If we worried about our boxes becoming orphans, we'd place very few boxes.
One of our goals is to place a box in a s many states as our little feet can
carry us! We find that most of these places are ones we would love to return to,
and often end up doing just that (i.e., Gettysburg, PA, Ashland. OR, Nantucket
MA). Whenever we read a sit rep from one of our far-away Lbs, we heave a
happy sigh wishing we were there, and sit back enjoying the fact that we brought a
little fun into some boxer's life.

My feeling is, never let this be a reason to NOT place a box. If there's a
problem in the future, you'll figure out a way to deal with it.

CSCM and I did that with a mystery box once without thinking and then sort of
regretted it later. Though, we have been thinking about asking someone to
adopt it. In my 20/20 hindsight I'd probably say it's not a great idea if you're
*never* going to visit the spot again.

I've placed boxes in areas where I do not live (VA and MD for example). I
tell the finder to e-mail me when they've found the box, so I know its ok. I
also have some people in the DC area who are willing to go and check on the box
every once in a while, especially if someone says its missing....

Hope this helps!

With the new structure of the web site, it would be better not to
have an orphaned box (cue Can-Can music). There are some
obligations that a person needs to attend to to keep a box in good
shape. e.g. replacing the log, replacing the box if it gets broken,
updating the clues if the area changes, dealing with the box if the
land owner objects, etc. A good option is to ask a local boxer to
adopt your box after you plant it. I have been reviewing the
abandoned boxes in my area, and I will be adopting some to keep the
clues and the boxes alive and kicking.

The "Adoption" on the site were only for people who have either left the
hobby or have not signed on to the new site. There is no reason why someone
should give up a box to another person if they are still on the site. I wouldn't
want someone else having rights to my box, if I'm still active on the site. I
think the box could stay in the placer's name. However, I would ask someone
who lives in the area to check on it every once in a while.

There's no reason why someone couldn't plan ahead and find a maintainer
in the area they're going to leave orphans in.

If you want someone to take care of boxes you leave in distant lands, then
go ahead and make them the maintainer. You have the option to add a
maintainer to your own boxes, so feel free to seek out someone to check
up on it for you. It'll stay in your name as placer, but they can answer
inquiries and make sure the logbook isn't full and such.

On a trip to the east coast last year I placed a few letterboxes,
hoping that somebody would find them, since there wasn't much
letterboxing activity in my state at the time. It seemed like a good
idea at the time and it is nice to hear from far-away folks who have
found one of the boxes.

But... on the flip side, it is frustrating to get reports that the
box was not found and may be missing and not have the ability to
check on it. I am fortunate that in some of these places I have made
other letterboxing contacts and can ask somebody to check on the box
for me.

Still, I feel that when you plant a letterbox, there is some
responsibility for maintaining it and keeping tabs on the status.
And since I am not able to do this with boxes I place while away, I
will be thinking hard before placing any new boxes while on vacation
or traveling.

Just my 2 cents...

I have a question on the function of the "maintainer" field. If a
name is entered here other than the placer, do they get to edit, or
delete, the clues? When a user clicks on the "contact the placer",
or similar link, at the top of the clues, who does the email go to?

Or is this function still in the development or policy forming stage?

Hello --

For the very reasons that you state, I am placing letterboxes only in places
where I know I have a reasonable chance of checking on them, replenishing
supplies in them, etc.

Nantucket!? My hometown! I am traveling there in a couple of weeks
and plan to plant a couple in some off the beaten path niches. I
have a father-in-law and a couple of good friends that I hope to
recruit as extended families to my boxes there.

The only sad thing is that I know my best friend there will love
this hobby yet she hardly ever leaves the island. Her boxing
opportunities will definitely be limited!

I have found six Nantucket plants. I don't see one with your name
on it. I see Mike S has been there and Lonemasswolf and Rustypuff.

Is yours a mystery? :-)

Happy boxing,

This is a response to an old post, but one I feel strongly about.

WHen I first heard about LB'ing (in 2001), I planted several in neat places during my travels for work.

I've had several reports of missing or wet boxes. These boxes are in Oklahoma. Since I'm in PA and unable to do maintenance, I have decided to only plant where I can check on boxes at least yearly if not more often. (I had asked the folks reporting the problems if they could "adopt", but they were passing through and were not able).

So, if you can believe it, I am planning a trip to Oklahoma JUST TO CHECK ON MY LETTERBOXES!!!! sheesh!

So, I agree with others who suggest NOT planting unless you or someone can maintain the LB's.
